IPSO: INDEPENDANT PRESS STANDARDS ORGINISATION):


'We hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press.'


Editors' Code Of Practice:

The code has seventeen headings of which the publishing companies must comply with, this can be seen in detail here. It is written by the Editors' Code Of Practice Committee, who also review and revise the code to ensure that it is fair. This code is used for the privacy of the people involved in the potential article, it cannot be compromised with to avoid leniency and enforce fairness. However, if an article or story gets flagged then you can appeal it with the committee and they will review the request. Following, are the codes with some of the explanations:


Accuracy.

Making sure that the content is all factually correct.

Privacy.

Safeguarding the personal information of the people involved in the article, this means not featuring personal details or things those involved don't want publicly released.

Harassment.

Refraining from making others feel uncomfortable by harassment, this includes not pestering when trying to gain interviews.

Intrusion into grief or shock.

Articles including sensitive content such as grief of a death shouldn't invade the life or personal details of those related to the case / incident.

Reporting suicide.

Details of the actual doing must not be in depth, to prevent influencing others to commit and to not trigger those who may be / become affected.

Children.

Children's education mustn't be intruded, they also must have their permission of parent or guardian to have their photos published.

Children in sex cases.

The child must not be identified, the adult may be however.

Hospitals.

Journalists identify themselves and must gain permission from an executive before entering to question.

Reporting of crime.

Relatives or friends of the person convicted shouldn't be identified unless they are genuinely related to the crime.

Clandestine devices and subterfuge.

The press must be open with their equipment, meaning that they cannot hide microphones or cameras in order to gain intel.

Victims of sexual assault.

Any details which may suggest the identity of the victim must be avoided to keep them safe, unless legally allowed to.

Discrimination.

Information regarding the individual's gender identity, sexual orientation, physical or mental situation or ethnicity should not be mentioned unless relevant to the story.

Financial journalism.

Confidential sources.

Journalists are morally obliged to protect their confidential sources.

Witness payments in criminal trials.

Payment to criminals.

Public interest.




NUJ (NATURITION UNION OF JOURNALISTS):


The NUJ is one of the largest unions wordwide made for journalists, they work to 'improve pay and conditions of [their] members and protect and promote media freedom, professionalism and ethical standards' (from this website). They ensure that they are properly rewarded for their work as well as negotiating the them. The union represents many media professionals and gives them a set of regulations of which they must not break in their publications.


The union represents towns and cities all across the UK and Europe, from 'staffers, casuals and freelances in broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, books, public relations, photographers and in new media'.
